In Memoriam: Roger G. Barry (1935-2018)

Roger G. Barry, former Director of the International CLIVAR Project Office (ICPO), passed away on March 19, 2018, concluding a distinguished career in climate science. His work as a research scientist and professor, and his dedication to the formation of centers for the study of the cryosphere helped shape the evolution of climate science.

2018 WCRP workshop: The Earth’s Energy Imbalance and its implications (EEI)

The Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) is one of the most fundamental metrics defining the status of global climate change and expectations for continued global warming. WCRP Core Projects work together for a new WCRP-wide initiative to identify research goals and opportunities for Earth’s Energy Imbalance and to strengthen future international scientific collaboration with experts for EEI assessments.

International Symposium on Regional Reanalysis

The Hans-Ertel-Centre for Weather Research is hosting the first International Symposium on Regional Reanalysis from 17 to 19 July 2018 in Bonn (Germany). With reanalysis and in particular reagional reanalysis data sets getting more and more attention, the goal of the symposium is to discuss and promote all aspects of regional reanalyses.

Ice-free Arctic projections under the Paris Agreement

Under the 2015 Paris Agreement, nations agreed to limit global mean warming to 2°C, while also working toward the more ambitious goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C. However, current pledges to support the Paris Agreement would only limit global warming to 3°C. Would meeting the Paris temperature goals be sufficient to avoid an ice-free Arctic?
