The 3^rd Open Science Symposium on Western Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate (3^rd OSS-2018) will be held on May 8-10, 2018 in Qingdao, China. As one of the most important communication platforms of Northwestern Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate Experiment (NPOCE), an international collaboration program endorsed by CLIVAR in 2010, this symposium will provide a forum for oceanographers, meteorologists and climate scientists to exchange recent progresses in their study of the western Pacific ocean (WPO) circulation, its climatic impact, and its commonality/difference with other oceans.  The symposium extends to marine biogeochemistry and ecosystem, their variability, changes and impacts, and will explore opportunities for international scientific collaboration and inter-disciplinary studies.  It will be an excellent opportunity for early career scientists and students to show-case their research and gain international exposure.

Hosted by Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, cosponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Natural Science Foundation of China, and Qingdao National Laboratory of Marine Science and Technology, this symposium will consist of a diverse yet coherent program covering topics including:

Session 1: Pacific Western Boundary Currents (WBCs) dynamics and variability

Session 2: Interaction of WPO circulation with adjacent waters (e.g., the East and South China Seas, ITF, Indian Ocean, extra-tropical Pacific Ocean)

Session 3: Roles of WPO circulation variability in warm pool and ENSO variability

Session 4: Influences of WPO on regional (e.g., monsoon, typhoon, extreme climatic events) and global climate systems and their predictability

Session 5: WPO’s role in and impacts on carbon cycle, biogeochemical process, acidification, ecosystem, paleo-oceanography, and so on

Session 6: Characteristics, dynamics and impact of WBCs in other oceans

As a famous seaside city of China, Qingdao is an important centre for marine science research and technology in China and home to several national ocean research institutions. It is also considered to be a unique melting pot of culture, cuisine, and sea view. In addition to the clean air, bathing beach, mellow Tsingtao Beer and delicious seafood, you will also be able to enjoy the feast of ocean circulation and climate research at this symposium.

Limited financial travel award will be open for application to support students and early career scientists, and a cash reward up to 5000 RMB will be given for the best poster presentation.
