Abstract: 

El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the dominant source of year-to-year climate variability, influencing global temperatures and rainfall in many regions. ENSO alters atmospheric circulation in the tropics, affecting weather patterns far beyond the Pacific. In this talk, I will explain the main processes behind these atmospheric teleconnections and why their impacts over land are difficult to predict. Differences between ENSO events, asymmetry between El Niño and La Niña, and the nonlinear atmospheric response to Pacific heating contribute to diverse seasonal impacts. Global warming adds another layer of complexity by changing the background climate and altering ENSO teleconnections. Climate projections suggest that these teleconnections may generally become stronger in the future, but important uncertainties remain regarding changes in the Pacific mean state and ENSO variability. I will discuss what we know about ENSO teleconnections today and how they may change in a warming climate.

Bio: 

Andrea Taschetto is an Associate Professor at the Climate Change Research Centre, University of New South Wales, and ARC Centre of Excellence for 21st Century Weather, Australia. Her research examines how sea surface temperature variability influences regional precipitation, particularly in the Southern Hemisphere. She is especially interested in the different types of El Niño Southern Oscillation, their effects on atmospheric circulation, and their interactions with other ocean basins.
