The objective of the two-day workshop focuses on synthesizing and improving our understanding of polar ocean heat, its dynamics, and the wide-reaching implications. It will consist of keynote overview talks, breakout sessions, and community discussion, and unite the Arctic, Southern Ocean and global research communities.

Keynotes will  concentrate on three themes:

  • Polar heat

  • Heat transports and large-scale circulation

  • Local & regional processes in a warming global climate

Keynote speakers:

Dr. Anna Wåhlin - University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Dr. David Ferreira - University of Reading, UK

Dr. Igor Polyakov - University of Alaska Fairbanks, US

Dr. Ed Doddridge - University of Tasmania, Australia

Dr. Léon Chafik - Stockholm University, Sweden

Dr. Adele Morrison - Australian National University, Australia

They will cover large-scale variability and local-scale processes in both polar regions, including heat budgets, polar amplification of global warming, and feedbacks between the atmosphere, liquid ocean and the cryosphere in the form of both ice shelves and sea ice.

The remainder of the workshop will be organized in breakout groups and a few plenaries to discuss the themes in detail and plan for 1-2 review papers as well as a CLIVAR report. The workshop will be a separate event immediately after the 2026 Ocean Sciences Meeting.

Attendance will be free for early-career researchers and a small registration fee of 100 GBP will be requested from other participants. There is limited funding available for early-career* participants to support their two-day stay during the workshop; please apply through the registration form by 14 November (now closed).
