Call for US CLIVAR Panel Members

The US CLIVAR Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) seeks qualified individuals to serve on its three subsidiary Panels:

These Panels formulate science goals and implementation strategies, catalyze and coordinate activities, and work with agencies and international partners to advance the progress of the climate research community. It is an exciting time to join the US CLIVAR Panels, as they work on planning activities to address the goals and research challenges articulated in the US CLIVAR Science Plan and to prepare for the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. US CLIVAR aims to foster understanding and prediction of climate variability and change on intraseasonal-to-centennial timescales through observations and modeling with emphasis on the role of the ocean and its interaction with other elements of the Earth system, and to serve the climate community and society through the coordination and facilitation of research on outstanding climate questions. Key research challenges include decadal variability and predictability, climate and extreme events, polar climate changes, and climate and marine carbon/biogeochemistry.

Each Panel is seeking members to enhance current strengths while adding expertise in new areas. Qualified nominees are expected to represent the broader interests of the research community, be willing and able to engage in scientific as well as programmatic discussions to advance Panel activities, and work with other members of the US and international CLIVAR communities.


The US CLIVAR POS Panel seeks new panelists with expertise to advance in situ and/or satellite ocean and atmosphere observations as well as modeling to synthesize observations to address one or more of the following areas: (a) coastal ocean interactions with the open ocean, atmosphere, and land; (b) high-latitude climate processes (in the Arctic and/or the Southern Ocean); (c) marine ecology and/or biogeochemistry response to climate variability and change; and/or (d) the role of the deep ocean in climate.


The US CLIVAR PSMI Panel seeks new panelists with expertise in field/process studies or model development in one or more of the following areas: (a) coupled ocean-atmosphere interactions with a focus on ocean mixing, surface flux, and boundary layer parameterization; (b) observational oceanography, including satellite techniques, field campaign experience, and/or biogeochemistry measurements; (c) observation and/or modeling of ocean mixing; and/or (d) application of machine learning and large data sets to oceanographic and climate process understanding and modeling.

The US CLIVAR PPAI Panel seeks new panelists with expertise in climate predictability and predictions in one or more of the following areas: (a) subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) variability including severe weather predictability at S2S timescales and downscaling for potential S2S applications; (b) ocean dynamics and the role of ocean processes in S2S and seasonal-to-decadal (S2D) predictability; (c) land-atmosphere interaction and effects of land surface processes on climate; and/or (d) transient and equilibrium climate sensitivity and sources of uncertainty in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP)-class models. Expertise is also needed in (e) climate services, climate science communication, and the applications interface (e.g., response to climate extremes, coastal inundation, impacts on marine ecosystem and fisheries, connections of climate and human health).

New panelists will serve for a term of four years and must have a US affiliation. Panel members must attend annual meetings of the Panel typically held in the summer. Every other year, the Panel meeting is held as part of a US CLIVAR Summit, which assembles the SSC, the Panels, the Project Office, funding agency managers, and other US and international program representatives to review progress, explore science needs, and plan future activities. Travel to attend the annual meeting is arranged and funded by the US CLIVAR Project Office. In the interval between annual meetings, Panel activities are carried out through email and teleconferences.

The deadline for submission is Friday, December 20, 2019. The US CLIVAR SSC will review applications and nominees will be notified of decisions following the January 2020 SSC meeting.
