Dr Wenju CAI has been appointed Co-Chair of the CLIVAR SSG commencing Jan 1, 2019
Dr Wenju Cai was elected as the Co-chair of the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group (SSG) during the WCRP 39th JSC meeting. Dr. Cai will succeed Prof. Detlef Stammer starting from Jan 1st, 2019 for a period of four years.
Before taking this position, Dr Cai served as member of the SSG, co-chair of the CLIVAR Pacific Regional panel, and also, member of the Pacific Regional panel, CLIVAR ENSO research foci, and CLIVAR Indonesian Throughflow Task Team at different time of the past 17 years. His service to science communities also includes contributing authorship to the IPCC AR4 and AR5 reports, and Director of the CSIRO Earth System Assessment programme (2013-2016).
Dr. Cai holds a number of prominent positions, including the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) Office of Chief Executive Science Leader, and Chief Research Scientist; Director of Center for Southern Hemisphere Oceans Research (CSHOR); Chief Scientist of Pilot National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology (Qingdao); and Green-card Professor of Ocean University of China.
With over 20 years of research and leadership experience, Dr. Cai’s interest spans from dynamics of modes of climate variability (such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the Indian Ocean Dipole, and the Southern Annular Mode) and their mechanisms, to climate detection and attribution (impacts of individual forcing factors of increasing carbon dioxide, increasing anthropogenic aerosols, and stratospheric ozone depletion). He has published over one hundred and sixty articles, including many highly influential papers in high-profiled journals.
