CLIVAR SSG Membership Rotation in 2023
At the beginning of 2023, the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group (SSG) experienced several changes in its membership:
Dr Wenju Cai ended his term of CLIVAR SSG Co-chair on December 31, 2022 after serving this position for 4 years. Dr Cai will remain member of the SSG for one more year. With his co-leadership, CLIVAR successfully organized a series of activities such as the ICTP-CLIVAR Summer School on Oceanic Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems 2019, the WCRP-CLIVAR Workshop on Climate Interactions among the Tropical Basins, the CLIVAR-FIO Summer School on Ocean Macroturbulence and Its Role in Earth’s Climate, etc.
Dr. Francois Engelbrecht, professor at the University of the Witwatersrand and Director of the Global Change Institute, succeeds Dr Wenju Cai as a new co-chair of CLIVAR SSG starting from January 1, 2023 for a period of four years.
At the same time, Prof Dake Chen, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and researcher at China’s State Key Laboratory of Satellite Ocean Environment Dynamics, and Dr M. Ravichandran, Secretary of India’s Ministry of Earth Sciences, also ended their term as CLIVAR SSG members. They are succeeded by Prof Fangli Qiao, Deputy Director-General and researcher of China’s First Institute of Oceanography and Dr Roxy Koll, climate scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Drs Cai, Chen and Ravichandran for their tremendous contributions both to the governance and research of CLIVAR, and to the broader community, and our warmest welcome to the new colleagues.
