CLIVAR Approves Two New Research Foci for Launch in 2026

The CLIVAR Research Foci (RF) concept was developed in response to the rapid pace of scientific advances, enabling the project to remain flexible and responsive to new ideas and challenges. Former RFs have proven to be an effective means of initiating a bottom-up process, encouraging new research and invigorating progress in areas of high priority to the climate research community. This fosters cross-panel and pan-WCRP community collaboration while also providing opportunities to entrain new scientists to CLIVAR.

In response to the 2025 Open Call, CLIVAR received a number of high-quality proposals. These were carefully evaluated by the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group (SSG) against several key criteria: alignment with CLIVAR and WCRP scientific priorities and strategies; global relevance and scope; scientific novelty that would be unlikely to receive support through national funding alone; and the clarity of proposed deliverables, capacity-building plans, and potential for synergies with other international projects and programmes.

We are pleased to announce that two proposals have been approved by the CLIVAR SSG as new Research Foci, with implementation set to begin in July 2026:

  • The Ocean Oxygen to Carbon Heat Nexus in a Warming Climate (O2CH) Co- chaired by Lijing Cheng and Takamitsu Ito.
  • Confronting Earth System Model Trends and Multidecadal Variability with Observations (CEMT-MV) Co- chaired by Isla Simpson, Malte Stuecker, Noel Keenlyside and Tiffany Shaw. The membership and webpage is being finalized and will be available on our website soon.

We warmly welcome both teams and look forward to their valuable contributions to CLIVAR’s scientific objectives. The CLIVAR community is encouraged to reach out to the co-chairs for participation and engagement. We wish them a productive and impactful journey ahead.
