ARP-18 organized in Hamburg in July 2023
The 18th Session of CLIVAR Atlantic Region Panel was successfully organized at Universität Hamburg, Germany and online on 17 July 2023, alongside the workshop on ‘Meeting AMOC Observation Needs in a Changing Climate’ which was organized on 18-20 July. During the ARP-18, a comprehensive review of the ARP activities was conducted, with the focus on three foci (AMOC, ocean climate risk and tropical Atlantic), the Atlantic as well as the Atlantic Ocean Blog. Panel members were also given the opportunity to briefly introduce their own researches to identify synergies and potential contribution to the panel. The future plan and membership were also discussed.
A few potential activities to be conducted by ARP in the upcoming 3-5 years include:
- More committed contributions to the Atlantic Ocean Blog were received from ARP members, with diversified topics, e.g., marine heatwave, sea level, AMOC, hurricane, and etc.
- More AMOC related activities will be organized, mainly through the AMOC Task Team, including an AMOC Summer School focusing on tropics to high latitudes Atlantic; AMOC workshops (modeling; biogeochemical aspects).
- Tropical Atlantic remains a focus of the panel, with meeting/webinar/review paper being planned.
- Activities focusing on ocean climate risks will be further explored, by linking more closely to the WCRP My Climate Risk Lighthouse Activity; proposing a sea level/risk initiative; developing climate impact graphic, etc.
- The panel will continue its effort to promote ocean observing design in the Atlantic Ocean, with a focus on Tropical Atlantic, AMOC, as well as promoting the data and data availability and etc.
