Wyrtki Symposium and ENSO Winter School 2025

The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of two milestone events of early El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) research that involved Klaus Wyrtki of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, a pioneering oceanographer who made groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of ENSO: The publication of his seminal Journal of Physical Oceanography 1975 paper: “El Niño—The dynamic response of the equatorial Pacific Ocean to atmospheric forcing”, and the launch of the El Niño Watch Expedition to verify the first ever El Niño forecast based on a statistical model using the Southern Oscillation Index.

A 3-day symposium will be held at the East West Center in Honolulu (Hawaii, USA) March 12th-14th 2025, to celebrate the legacy of Klaus Wyrtki and discuss the state-of-the-art of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) research and other aspects of Wyrtki's research program.

We welcome abstract submissions on all aspects of ENSO research, with special focus on ENSO dynamics, modeling, prediction, and impacts, as well as other research that was inspired by Wyrtki's scientific contributions.

The registration fee will likely be ~350 USD.

Abstract submission is now open on the symposium website until the deadline on October 15th 2024:

We strongly recommend submitting abstracts as soon as possible as the number of attendees will be limited to ~130.

The website includes further details on the symposium. We are looking forward to your abstracts.

ENSO Winter School 2025

A Winter Course on the Fundamental Dynamics of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation hosted @ the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA, March 15 - 23, 2025.

The ENSO Winter School 2025 aims to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of researchers in El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
Through a dynamic and immersive learning experience, students will be equipped with knowledge of the fundamental dynamics of ENSO through a hierarchical modeling approach, and will gain the practical skills needed to advance ENSO theory, prediction, and applications.
Our goal is to create the next generation of leaders in ENSO research, dedicated to advancing scientific understanding and addressing the challenges surrounding the response of ENSO to climate change and its complex impacts on global weather and climate.
The symposium will be followed by a 9-day Winter School, focusing on the fundamental dynamics of ENSO, with the goal to inspire, educate, and empower the next generation of researchers who will advance ENSO theory, prediction, and applications.

Important Dates:
15 October 2024, 23:59 HST (Hawaii Standard Time): Deadline to apply for admission & financial support
November 2024: Applicants notified of admission
