A New International Monsoons Project Office Established
In recognition of the shared interest in monsoons research, the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP) have signed an agreement for a joint International Monsoons Project Office (IMPO) and the office has now been established at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune, India. Built on the experience gained with the International CLIVAR Monsoon Project Office (ICMPO) during 2015-2021, IMPO will coordinate monsoon-related activities of both Programmes for an initial period of five years starting from 30 July 2021.
One of the core responsibilities of the IMPO is to support the activities of the CLIVAR/GEWEX Monsoons Panel and other monsoon-related activities within WCRP. IMPO also supports the monsoon relevant activities of the WWRP, particularly through its Working Group on Tropical Meteorology Research (WGTMR) and on the organization of the International Workshop on Monsoons (IWM) series co-led by WWRP. In addition, IMPO will promote cross-panel linkages within the working structures of the WWRP and WCRP, particularly on the Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) timescale.
Taking this opportunity, we appreciated the support and contribution from ICMPO and the Indian government in the past five years to the CLIVAR project, and look forward to further cooperation under the new IMPO structure.
