[CLIVAR Endorsed] East Asian Workshop on A Predicted Ocean
On 31 December 2020, the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the formal launch of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030, Ocean Decade for short). The Decade is designated to boost international coordination and cooperation in ocean research and scientific programmes for better management of ocean and coastal zone resources and reducing maritime risks. The Ocean We Want for a sustainable future is represented by seven Decade Outcomes, one of which is A Predicted Ocean. On 1 June 2021, the virtual High-Level Launch of the Ocean Decade was hosted in Berlin, Germany. Seven online events named Ocean Decade Laboratories will take place between June 2021 and July 2022, with each addressing one of the seven outcomes. The UN Ocean Decade Laboratories provide an international platform to strengthen dialogue among countries and organizations, catalyze potential international cooperation and expand the influence of the Decade.
The second UN Ocean Decade Laboratory, A Predicted Ocean, will take place on 15-17 September 2021, including a series of online activities of 48-hour long. The East Asian Workshop, as one of the important satellite activities of the Laboratory, is co-sponsored by the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), Ministry of Natural Resources of China, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), V.I.Il'ichev Pacific Oceanological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences (PIO) and Chonnam National University of Korea (CNU). Fourteen experts in the ocean and climate research from China, Japan, Korea, Russia, USA etc., will present their latest research results related to ocean and climate model development, key physical processes and extreme air-sea interaction etc. The workshop will discuss potential Ocean Decade programmes.
This workshop has been endorsed by CLIVAR.
