Climate and Ocean -
Variability, Predictability, and Change

Jose Santos, Executive Director of the International CLIVAR Project Office, attended online the 4th Open Science Symposium on Western Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate and provided some remarks.

OOPC-25 was organized at EUMETSAT, UK in-person and also online from 20 to 21 October 2022. Representatives from GCOS, GOOS, WCRP and CLIVAR IORP, ARP, GSOP, NORP and ICPO attended the meeting.

The first CLIVAR Climate Dynamics Panel (CDP) annual workshop successfully wrapped up on 19th October 2022. 

Four outstanding Early Career Scientists won the ECS Best Poster Award at the recently concluded CLIVAR Climate Dynamics Panel (CDP) 2022 workshop

Congratulations to Dr Roxy Mathew Koll and Dr Edem Mahu for receiving AGU's Devendra Lal Memorial Medal and Africa Award for Research Excellence in Ocean Sciences respectively.

CLIVAR and PICES have had demonstrated long-time successful interdisciplinary cooperation, through the cooperation of several PICES Working Groups (WGs).

Recently, together with colleagues, two members from CLIVAR Ocean Model Development Panel (OMDP) conducted a comprehensive analysis on the Arctic sea surface salinity (SSS), liquid freshwater content (LFWC) and freshwater budget by comparing the CMIP6 to the CMIP5 results, showing that the salinity of the Barents Sea Opening is projected to keep declining in the future.

A publication “Weakening of the Atlantic Niño variability under global warming” in Nature Climate Change was released in early September. Two CLIVAR members, Noel Keenlyside and Ingo Richter, contributed to this paper.

The online NORP-SORP workshop on polar fresh water: Sources, Pathways and ImpaCts of frEsh water in northern and soUthern Polar oceans and seas (SPICE UP) concluded successfully on 21 September 2022.
