IOGOOS/IOP/SIBER/IRF Annual Meetings and 1st IIOE-2 Steering Committee Meeting and Bio-Argo Workshop

Monday, January 30, 2017 to Saturday, February 4, 2017
Event City:
Perth
Australia
Event Attendance:
By invitation
Event Description:

The integrated meetings of IOGOOS-13, IOP-13, SIBER-7 and IRF-7 will be held in conjunction with the first meeting of the IIOE-2 Steering Committee and a special Bio-Argo workshop between 30 January and 4 February 2017.

The main objective of that particular meeting will be to prepare the IndOOS review. This will be one of the major IORP activities in 2017. IndOOS was conceived about 10 years ago and it is now time to review its design. The IORP will organise and coordinate this review, sponsored by OOPC. The IORP will produce a white paper as background during 2017, with the review itself taking place in a 2 day workshop coordinated with the proceeding meeting of IOP/IOGOOS/IRF/SIBER, anticipated in early 2018. A workshop report with specific recommendations for evolving the system would be drafted and circulated to the sponsors for comment before being finalised.

3 days have been scheduled at the upcoming IORP/SIBER/IOGOOS meeting in Perth (back to back with the IIOE-2 steering committee) so that the IOP chairs and panel members, can work together towards drafting a white paper. Specifically, participants will gather information, hear from experts, develop a framework for the white paper, and delegate specific responsibilities moving forward. To that end, talks by IORP and SIBER members and invited experts to gather information are scheduled on the following aspects:

  • learn the history of IndOOS, successes and failures, and the big science achieved, so that we can identify issues and strategies related to designing and sustaining IndOOS.
  • get information and ideas about how to conduct a review, so that we can identify the best way to evaluate and evolve IndOOS
  • hear about important scientific advancements and broad-scale climate questions from across the Indian Ocean basin, so that we can identify the high impact science IndOOS will need to contribute to in the future.
